Mills College at Northeastern University
As part of Northeastern University’s westward expansion, the former Mills College campus in Oakland, California was acquired by Northeastern and underwent a full renovation to support student life and dining on the West Coast. A major focus of this work was a complete transformation of the original 1960s era dining hall into a modern, inclusive, and high-functioning facility.

To alleviate the landlocked constraints of Northeastern’s Boston campus, the university acquired Mills College and launched a campus-wide renovation. Working alongside SmithGroup Architects, LDL Studio was responsible for Food Service layouts, equipment and servery design, structured into a two phase renovation of the existing two -story dining hall coordinated to project overall Interior renovation. The reimagined space now features eight flexible menus platforms arranged in a food Marché-style layout, including several dedicated to allergen-free service. A full reprogramming of the level 1 kitchen created a fully allergenic-free cooking environment, while the 22,000-square-foot kitchen and loading dock on the second floor were completely overhauled. Key upgrades include a new food waste collection system, walk-in refrigeration, custom kitchen hood systems, and a signature electric pizza oven designed as a high-capacity, visual centerpiece.
