Red Panda Pavilion

The new Red Panda Pavilion at Roger Williams Park Zoo replaces an outdated enclosure with a new two-story, climate-controlled habitat that follows AZA guidelines. Designed to support animal welfare, breeding, and guest engagement, the project creates a dynamic and enriching space for both red pandas and visitors.

When LDL Studio was selected as Architect and Interior Designer for the Red Panda Pavilion, the goal was to dramatically improve both animal care and the visitor experience. The previous enclosure—built from plywood and old fencing beneath a public walkway—offered limited space and difficult working conditions for staff. The new pavilion introduces a multi-level, climate-controlled interior exhibit to house up to three breeding pairs of red pandas, with enhanced interior circulation allowing the animals to freely move between indoor and outdoor spaces. Dedicated areas for feeding, maintenance, and research provide improved functionality for zoo staff. Outside, the newly constructed habitat features all-natural climbing structures and is three times larger than the original, offering multiple viewing opportunities for guests at varying heights to the outdoor exhibits. Positioned as one of the top red panda breeding programs in the U.S., the project sets a new standard for animal habitat design while deepening the zoo’s commitment to conservation and education.
