Yale KBT Cafe

The KBT Café at Yale University was designed as a temporary, high-functioning café located in the lobby of the Kline Biology Tower. Conceived as an interim solution during the campus's master planning process, the café met immediate hospitality needs while accommodating future growth. LDL Studio approached the project with speed, flexibility, and modular design at its core. The result is a compact, efficient space that balances utility with student-focused comfort.

As Yale Hospitality awaited the construction of a new adjacent dining facility, LDL Studio was engaged to design a modular café that could be installed quickly and serve as a bridge solution. Housed in a repurposed classroom, the KBT Café features a custom-designed kiosk offering beverages, snacks, and lounge seating to support student and faculty activity throughout the day. A standout element of the project was the “kit of-parts” system—modular components engineered to fit through standard doorways and assemble on-site with minimal disruption. This plug-and-play model allowed the café to be fully installed over a single summer, maximizing efficiency without compromising function. Close coordination with Yale Hospitality and Yale Facilities ensured the design met both immediate operational needs and the university’s long-term planning goals. The final result is a thoughtful, adaptable space that exceeds expectations for a student venue.
